I’ve been toying with the idea of styling my hair with dreadlocks like Lauryn Hill for a really long time. I haven’t gone through with it because I’m chicken and my family isn’t very supportive. They weren’t supportive when I cut it off either, but something about the persona of Lauryn Hill makes me want to try it. A venerable style icon in the world of R&B, Lauryn Hill set the stage for both music and style for today’s artists. Janelle Monae has been named as her predecessor of sorts, but I’m hesitant to say that anyone can compare to this empress of cool. Her music has spoken to generations and from afros to locks and leopard print to black, she’s this driving force that has the potential to overpower the soul. I suppose marrying into the closest thing to Jamaican royalty, the Marley family, Lauryn Hill holds a sacred place in the hearts and minds of anyone who’s ever took heed to the lyrics of any track on ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’. Lauryn always looks amazing in a halter, and she’s never been shy about prints, a piece like this Missoni vertical striped jumpsuit is a must-have when channeling her style. I love wire necklaces and this one is almost an exact replica of a necklace Lauryn has been photographed wearing time and time again. The cover art for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is legitimate art as far as I’m concerned, and this acrylic painting from Artie Barksdale elevates it to another level. Lauryn loves her leopard, and while I’m not sure I could pull off a leopard print coat like her I most certainly could rock this cross body vintage-esque leopard print bag.
Five picks of things I’m coveting deeply.
The piece for the ultimate glamor gal, loaded with tons of Swarovski crystal beads, in Spring’s freshest color palette, this Swarovski Glamour Mint necklace is oozing with opulence. Its knots of fuschia, pinks, iridescent white and mint green make it totally wearable with jeans, a boyfriend blazer and a slouchy tunic, or an LBD for girls night out.
When Missoni named Leighton Meester one of the stars of their spring campaign I fell in love all over again. Missoni’s Tilde spaghetti strap dress infuses everything I love about color into one of its signature prints, creating a dress in a figure flattering silhouette I absolutely adore.
Maybe it’s the impending nuptials of Kate and William, but I’m finding all sorts of Britain’s favorite accessories more and more attractive. From hats to gloves, I’d even be on board for dressing up like Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady for the races at Ascot, with a little twist on the color scheme of course. These Duck Egg Blue Suede Gloves are 100% leather and completely irresistible.
Ever have a really shiny nail polish that you just wish you could find in matte? Essie’s Matte About You saves me the trouble of searching for matte nail polish (which is like searching for a needle in a haystack), with one coat of this Essie formula any of my favorite polishes turns matte within seconds. I plan to put it to good use this season.
The legend of Narcissus tells about a man who was so in love with his own reflection that he fell in to a lake and drowned while starring at his own reflection. I don’t plan to die staring at my own reflection but this made to order mirror by Esque Studio, aptly named Narcissus reminds me a little bit of the one from Beauty and The Beast and I’d be delighted to have it sit on my vanity.
