Live for Today – 9/11

Live for Today 9/11 SoHo Street Art

This city inspires me everyday, and today was no exception. I hopped off the N Train at Prince St this morning only for my (speed) walk to work to be obstructed by people snapping pictures of the street. I looked to my left and discovered an infinitely cool, literal piece of street art memorializing 9/11. Everyone remembers where they were that day, I didn’t even live in the US and I can tell you that I sat in horror as the TV in my middle school classroom relayed the news. It occurred to me that I never really knew New York before it was scarred by terrorism. In a sense my heart breaks for the New York City I’ll never know, more than ever, it breaks for the people that never made it past that day, the families that grieve such a profound loss to this day. I don’t think there was a more New York way to honor their memory 11 years later than a piece of street art in Soho at Prince St and Broadway with the words “Live for Today 9/11″ spray painted on a pedestrian crossing turned makeshift American flag.

I won’t take those words lightly.

Sound Off: “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” Costume Institute Gala At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

I expected a bit more drama from the guests of last night’s Met Gala, especially with the night being a tribute to Alexander McQueen’s Savage Beauty exhibit. Perhaps I expected too much because, while industry titans, taste makers and stars took to the red carpet I couldn’t help but feel a little underwhelmed.

I expected brilliance, ‘splendiforousness’ and all the wonder that come with names like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Society, Anna Wintour, Vogue, and Alexander McQueen.

Christina Ricci in Zac PosenMy favorite gown of the night, this Zac Posen spider web dress is positively divine. It’s as if the Adams Family took to the high fashion world in a frock that embodies the Savage Beauty that the Met Gala was supposed to exhibit.

Andre Leon Talley & Anna WintourBlake Lively with Karl Lagerfeld

It may be Anna Wintour posing center stage in Chanel, but it’s definitely Andre Leon Talley that’s caught my eye. The Isabel Toledo cerulean blue cape has an outlandish quality and his facial expression takes the cake – his whole persona was perfectly in tune with the drama that the Met Gala is supposed to encourage. As for Blake Lively, between the strawberry blond locks and the Chanel couture gown that manages to conceal all of her assets, I just couldn’t understand it, at the very least I can usually expect something that deserves a closer look – this does not.

Leighton MeesterI didn’t much care for her Louis Vuitton corset dress to be honest, but there was this sort of startling resemblance to Audrey Hepburn in Leighton Meester last night that I can’t take my eyes off of her. From the moment I saw her in the first episode of Gossip Girl, I knew the casting director made the right choice.

In other news, here were the hits from last night’s foray onto the red carpet:

Outfit Anatomy: Selena Gomez at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2011

Red carpet or orange, Selena Gomez is always hitting my best dressed list, and it’s between that and the fact that she’s a bonafide sweetheart that she’s become one of my favorite young Hollywood stars. Selena would be a dream to style and her willingness to play with color is so refreshing. Although I’m still wondering if she managed to get out of the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards unscathed by the signature green goop I loved everything about her outfit, except for her tootsies that were in need of a pedicure. Selena took over the orange carpet at LA’s Galen Center with her usual, fresh and beautiful presence.

Jewelry Heist: IPPOLITA Jewelry Preview

It’s pronounced ip-poe-lit-a, (in case you were wondering) but pronunciation aside my jewelry obsession was sent into a frenzy two nights ago at the Ippolita Jewelry Preview in NYC. The designer Ippolita is quite right when she says — “my jewelry is designed for the modern woman — effortlessly wearable pieces you’ll reach for everyday for every occasion.” I’d wear Ippolita morning, noon and night. I’m obsessed with the Rock Candy Collection, it’s use of my obsession, turquoise, is positively mind blowing, as are the Wonderland and Rose collections. As I perused the collections neatly displayed on wooden Ippolita monogrammed frames, sipping a few cocktails and nibbling on the sweet confection of a few cake pops – I couldn’t help but notice that every piece was more stunning than the next. It’s modern, it’s raw, and each piece emits a kind of effortless beauty that jewelry this good should. I spied by the window an over-sized pair of earrings on an equally large stand, and now I’m trying to figure out how to make one for my own humble abode. All in all, Ippolita’s pieces are timeless, and they’ll look good from morning to night, but the piece that I’m really coveting is the jumbo chainlink bracelet, it’s positively fabulous – that is all.  I took home this sweet little charm necklace that I’m currently trying to style five different ways for a post of its own, but until then take a look at what should be called jewelry porn below.
